Lemon Love
As I was admiring Meyer lemons that had just arrived at P Street’s Whole Foods last Sunday morning, a pair of five year old twins came from behind like pinballs jetting through the section. Their hungover, bedheaded parents corralled them in monotone while the kids ignored them.
“Lemons!!” the kids shrieked as they stopped where I was standing, grabbing them from the front of the pyramid and holding them up for their parents to buy.
What kid likes plain old lemons? Their parents must be food nerds. Their glee got me thinking about holiday citrus season and lemons in particular: a taste of sunshine as the weather turns cold.
Where have you had something deliciously lemon lately? I love the lemon bar with gelato at Restaurant Eve’s Lickety; the hint of lemon in Adam Bernbach’s charred wine with chocolate bitters cocktail at Bar Pilar; and fried lemons at Palena and Liberty Tavern. (What’s the possibility of a Dairy Godmother Meyer lemon-inspired sorbet?)
