Peepfest

Only a few more days to stock up on Easter candy. As far as candy is concerned, Easter used to remind me of my grandmothers– in particular, my Grandma McCart from Boston, who sent me the plastic pink flamingo of Easter candy, the panoramic egg. As fun as it was when I was little to peep inside a candy egg to find a tiny, pastoral scene, they were generally pretty garish and not really edible– like uncooked ramen noodles, except sweet.
These days, I associate Easter candy with more mo
re mainstream goodies such as 1) Cadbury Cream Eggs. What is that edible mucus in the center? 2) Pastel M&Ms 3) Jelly Belly’s 4) Brach’s Malted Milk Eggs 5) boring chocolate bunnies– only fun for dismembering and 6) Peeps, the best for last.
As of late, I’ll never think of these without associating them with one particular friend, who recently bought a grill on which she used bunny Peeps as the marshmallow part of Easter S’mores: a good idea.
Those of you who really like them might want to click on this peep haiku website or the Culinary Institute of America’s video on how to make your own Peeps in the waning days before the holiday comes and goes. I also associate them with this post on Gothamist last year. If you’re a Peep fan, you’ve probably seen it.
Despite that Peeps’ shelf life might outlast a Twinkies’, I have to admit that I get excited when I first see them in stock at the start of the season. Have some favorite Easter candies or Peep recipes? Please chime in.
