Hangover Helpers for Holidays

Posted by melissamccart on December 4, 2006

hangover.gifWhether you view them as festive or interminable, holiday soirees mean more opportunities for champagne toasting, beer swilling,  wine sipping, and general boozing.  While tipsy or drunken nights can be fun and all, it’s the weekday morning hangover you can do without.

What to do at 7am for that date with your desk when you’re hungover?  I asked some friends what they do to ease a hangover aside from drinking water.  Here’s a short list:

1) coffee– the retro cure

2) Gatorade

3) Emergen-C

4) fountain Coke

5) diner food

6) 2 tablespoons of honey before bed

7) ginger ale or soda and bitters

8) hair of the dog

In “Bender Fender” in yesterday’s Style section of the Times, Berocca was listed as the European cure-all made by Bayer.  Except it isn’t sold on these shores.  Why try and sell a hangover helper to “a nation of former teetotalers?” Yikes.

Speaking of hangovers, should you find yourself on the couch rather than the office after a night of too much drinking, nurse yourself back to health for the day with a fun read–Soundbites:  Eating on Tour with Franz Ferdinand. Apparently, Kapranos used to write about food and drink for the Guardian before his music career took off.

In the meantime, it’s always nice to have a some hangover helper suggestions in the hopper.  Please, share.

  2. Re: #4. It has to be from a fountain! So glad you agree. Pebble ice also helps immensely. My regular hangover cure in college was a fountain coke with vanilla syrup from Sutton’s, the old pharmacy in Chapel Hill. Ah, how I miss it.

  3. How about garlic? It’s already touted as a anti-viral, anti-biotic, anti-fungal. It may lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and decrease your chances of contracting diabetes. It may even have cancer-fighting properties.

Nutrients include iron, zinc, and the B vitamins as well as phytochemicals like allicin and oleanolic acid.

Why wouldn’t it be a good hangover cure?

I prefer not to get a hangover in the first place. It usually works prety good. :P

  5. I’ve always been a fan of one or two apples. Puts a little something in your stomach and helps to hydrate you. If you get sick, it’s better to toss up apple remnants than dry heave.

i think the best thing for a hangover is water. literally drinking as much as your body can handle as fast as you can. when i have a hangover i drink it early and fast when i get up. of course drinking some the night before is even better, maybe even some while you are drinking.

  8. The best hangover cure is to prevent it in the first place. If you will drink a glass of water after you finish one drink and before you begin the next one, you will not get a hangover.

Plus there is the concept of drinking moderately. What is the point of drinking until you are sick?

The advice about eating apples so you won’t dry heave is lost on me. I am over 50, not a teetotaller and I have NEVER been so drunk that I was sick. Never.

  9. healing,
My intention is to speak to people who feel under the weather, not dry heaving in the am. Not sure how effective these suggestions are once someone is at that point. . . but who’s to know?
